Why Baron Zemo Will Be Radically Different In The MCU image

Although Captain America: Civil War’s main conflict will be between the heroes feuding on whether they should be regulated by the government, the movie won’t be without its own clear-cut antagonist. It’s been said repeatedly this year that Inglorious Basterds star Daniel Brühl will play longtime Captain America nemesis Baron Helmut Zemo, though Marvel has yet to officially state this. Regardless, fans should know that the Zemo we’ll see in the 2016 blockbuster will be much different than he is in the comics, and not just because he won’t be wearing his trademark purple mask.

Despite being unwilling to directly confirm that Zemo is in the movie, half of the directing duo Joe Russo told Empire that they decided to alter the character for Captain America: Civil War so that he can provide something new for the MCU. As Russo put it:

Zemo in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is not Zemo from the comics, and what’s interesting and surprising is that we don’t always honour the mythology from the books. One, because it’s predictable and two, it’s not servicing the story in the way we want. So, if Zemo were in this movie, I think people should expect that it’s going to be something fresh and exciting.

Marvel is known to make changes to certain characters in the MCU, from The Abomination’s altered background and look in The Incredible Hulk to Ben Kingsley being only a faux Mandarin in Iron Man 3, so hearing Zemo is going to be changed for Captain America: Civil War isn’t terribly surprising. His purple getup was already destined to never make it to live action, but going off Russo’s comments, it sounds like he may not be quite the terrorist he is in the comics. Despite him having moments of heroism leading the Thunderbolts on the printed page, Helmut Zemo has primarily just continued the villainous legacy inherited from his father Heinrich, the man responsible for Bucky Barnes’ presumed death and Steve Rogers ending up in suspended animation.

Despite this new information, we’re still in the dark on how Zemo fits into Captain America: Civil War. Our only clue is when Elizabeth Olsen, returning as Scarlet Witch, described Brühl earlier this year as playing the "main villain." While that still doesn’t quite narrow down what he’s up to, it’s possible that Zemo will play a key role (either in the shadows or in public) in getting the Sokovia Accords drafted so the world’s superheroes will be officially policed. This would then allow him to enact his own nefarious plans unimpeded…until a certain Star Spangled Avenger shows up to foil them, that is.

Captain America: Civil War hits theaters on May 6, 2016.

Adam Warlock Guardians of the Galaxy
Adam Warlock
Those who watched the first Guardians of the Galaxy (and the first post-credits sequence in Thor: The Dark World, for that matter), know that the lair of The Collector included something that looked a hell of a lot like Adam Warlock’s cocoon from Marvel Comics. Many took this as a suggestion that the character is going to make his live-action debut in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 - but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen. James Gunn has said that the cocoon definitely looks a hell of a lot like Warlock’s, but that its inclusion was merely based on the fact that he thought it looked cool. It’s true this doesn’t completely rule out Adam Warlock for the 2017 blockbuster, but it doesn’t look great.
The Avengers Guardians of the Galaxy
The Avengers
As you may know, Marvel Studios has a bit of a history when it comes to bringing their various franchise characters together. They amazed the world when they did it with Joss Whedon’s The Avengers back in 2012, and they did it again with Whedon’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron. As a result, it’s long been expected that the company will eventually team up the earthbound heroes with those from Guardians of the Galaxy… but you shouldn’t expect that to happen any time soon. James Gunn has gone on the record many times saying that he doesn’t have an extreme desire to see the two worlds immediately start to collide, and has added that he doesn’t see Guardians of the Galaxy 2 as a roadmap to get his characters to meet up with Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and the rest in The Avengers: Infinity War.

Guardians Of The Galaxy 2: What We Know So Far

MOVIE NEWS

Guardians Of The Galaxy 2: What We Know So Far

By PRAISE EMMANUEL

There are no two ways about it: James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy turned out to be an absolutely massive hit. Not only did it earn some of the best reviews of 2014, it also turned out to be massively popular with movie-goers and a box office smash. With all of the buzz going into opening weekend, it was barely a surprise when Marvel Studios announced before the first film even opened that a Guardians of the Galaxy 2 would be out in 2017. Now it’s easily one of our most anticipated future titles.

Marvel Studios is, of course, very good at keeping details about their in-development projects secret, but every so often a cool little bit of info sneaks out and tells us just a little bit more about the film. That’s where we come in. Below you’ll find a compilation of every detail we know about Guardians of the Galaxy 2 so far, from who we know is coming back to what new characters we can expect to show up. Read on, and learn!

James Gunn Guardians of the Galaxy

James Gunn

Prior to the first Guardians of the Galaxy, writer/director James Gunn never worked on a feature with a budget higher than $15 million, but any and all doubts about him as a blockbuster filmmaker were put to rest with movie’s release. Throughout production, Gunn and Marvel got along famously, which is perhaps a big part of why he is coming back to both write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy 2. The news was made official at San Diego Comic-Con 2014 when the director paired up with star Chris Pratt on a video presentation to announce the project’s official release date: May 5, 2017. As the film moves through pre-production, he will surely keep hammering away at the script, getting it prepared for the start of filming in 2016.

Star-Lord Guardians of the Galaxy

Peter Quill a.k.a. Star-Lord

Peter Quill a.k.a. Star-Lord (played by Chris Pratt) was a womanizing, asshole thief when we first met him as an adult in Guardians of the Galaxy, but he undergoes an incredible arc in the movie that sees him really transform into a mature leader. As noted in Gamora’s final lines in the film, he is who the rest of the Guardians are now looking to for guidance as they go on further adventures. We can surely expect him to still have deep emotional ties to his dead mother – which will come out through Awesome Mix Vol. 2 – not to mention the fact that he will be on the hunt for the identity of his real father, who it turns out wasn’t actually from Earth.

Gamora Guardians of the Galaxy

Gamora

Gamora (played by Zoe Saldana) has certainly had it rough for her entire life, her parents being killed right in front of her by a psychotic alien who would wind up raising her as a daughter. But those dark days seem to be behind her. She has found a new family in Peter Quill, Rocket, Drax and Groot, and she is pursuing her happiness. Of course, just because she may be trying to leave the past in the past doesn’t mean that her enemies will do the same. Thanos will be incredibly displeased that his "favorite" daughter has betrayed him to become a hero, and let’s also not forget that the dangerous and extremely pissed off Nebula is still around and fighting. We won’t be surprised in the slightest if both come back to play key roles in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 as a result.

Groot Guardians of the Galaxy

Groot

He can only say three words (okay, five words), but still Groot, the alien tree voiced by Vin Diesel, was able to create some of the most emotional moments in Guardians of the Galaxy - one of them being his incredible self-sacrifice to save his friends in the third act. Aboard the Dark Aster with the rest of the Guardians as it was crashing down to the surface of Xandar, Groot grew and morphed to become a protective shell for his teammates in order to save them… and he was shattered into a million pieces as a result. The good news is that it’s incredibly hard to kill a Groot thanks to their regenerative powers. At the end of Guardians of the Galaxy, Groot is nothing more than a sapling who enjoys grooving to the sound of the Jackson 5, but by the time we see him in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 he may be full grown once again. At that time, he will once again be back in fighting shape to perform the tasks that his teammates physically can’t.

Drax The Destroyer Guardians of the Galaxy

Drax The Destroyer

In bringing Drax the Destroyer to life in Guardians of the Galaxy, Dave Bautista not only provided the movie with some of its best laughs, but also many of its most dramatic moments. The hatred and rage that Drax felt towards Ronan was extremely powerful and palpable, and while it ultimately wasn’t he who 100% directly killed his sworn foe (it was a team effort), he certainly got his revenge. The problem is that killing Ronan didn’t give him the satisfaction he needed to get over the death of his wife and daughter (this is why revenge is no good, people!). Now the character has turned all of his attention towards Thanos, who he knows has been pulling the strings all along anyway. Will he succeed? It’s hard to say at this point, but the characters most certainly do have a history in the comics. Whether or not that will be Drax’s main drive in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is up in the air right now, but James Gunn has at the very least promised that we will learn a bit about the alien warrior "that nobody knows."

BREAKING: Fuel Scarcity: Oil workers suspend strike

BREAKING: Fuel Scarcity: Oil workers suspend strike

Nigerian oil workers suspended their five-day strike Friday after a meeting with the petroleum minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke.

President Goodluck Jonathan had waded into the crisis Friday, directing Mrs. Alison-Madueke to immediately convene a meeting with striking oil workers’ unions.

The meeting which began in the afternoon was ongoing at the presidential villa as of 7p.m. Friday.

The meeting came as scarcity of fuel bit harder across the country.

PREMIUM TIMES understood that the president had directed Mrs. Alison-Madueke to dialogue with the leaders of the two main oil workers unions, the Petroleum and National Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, and National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, over their grievances.

The oil workers had downed tools over the management of their pensions.

The unions also demanded the government to take Turn Around Maintenance of Nigeria’s four refineries more seriously.

Other demands of the unions include the need for increased allocation of crude oil for local refining to help reduce the growing reliance on importation of petroleum products for domestic consumption.

“Government has given a commitment to resolve all issues particularly the issue of Turn Around Maintenance and increment of allocation of crude oil,” the secretary of PENGASSAN, Bayo Oluwoshile told PREMIUM TIMES.

Some nights I stay up cashing in my bad luck
Some nights I call it a draw
Some nights I wish that my lips could build a castle
Some nights I wish they'd just fall off

But I still wake up, I still see your ghost
Oh, Lord, I'm still not sure what I stand for oh
Whoa oh oh (What do I stand for?)
Whoa oh oh (What do I stand for?)
Most nights I don't know anymore...
Oh, whoa, oh, whoa, oh, whoa, oh, oh,
Oh, whoa, oh
, whoa, oh, whoa, oh, oh

This is it, boys, this is war - what are we waiting for?
Why don't we break the rules already?
I was never one to believe the hype
Save that for the black and white
I try twice as hard and I'm half as liked,
But here they come again to jack my style

That's alright (that's alright)
I found a martyr in my bed tonight
She stops my bones from wondering just who I am, who I am, who I am
Oh, who am I? Mmm... Mmm...

Well, some nights I wish that this all would end
'Cause I could use some friends for a change.
And some nights I'm scared you'll forget me again
Some nights I always win, I always win...

But I still wake up, I still see your ghost
Oh, Lord, I'm still not sure what I stand for, oh
Whoa oh oh (What do I stand for?)
Whoa oh oh (What do I stand for?)
Most nights I don't know... (oh, come on)

So this is it. I sold my soul for this?
Washed my hands of that for this?
I miss my mom and dad for this?

(Come on)

No. When I see stars, when I see, when I see stars, that's all they are
When I hear songs, they sound like a swan, so come on.
Oh, come on. Oh, come on. Oh, come on!

Well, that is it guys, that is all - five minutes in and I'm bored again
Ten years of this, I'm not sure if anybody understands
This one is not for the folks at home;
Sorry to leave, mom, I had to go
Who the fuck wants to die alone all dried up in the desert sun?

My heart is breaking for my sister and the con that she called "love"
When I look into my nephew's eyes...
Man, you wouldn't believe the most amazing things that can come from...
Some terrible nights... ah...

Oh, whoa, oh, whoa, oh, whoa, oh, oh,
Oh, whoa, oh, whoa, oh, whoa, oh, oh

The other night you wouldn't believe the dream I just had about you and me
I called you up but we'd both agree

It's for the best you didn't listen
It's for the best we get our distance... Oh...
It's for the best you didn't listen
It's for the best we get our distance... Oh...

Oil divides: rebuilding peace in the Niger Delta

Oil divides: rebuilding peace in the Niger Delta

The case of Rumuekpe Community, Niger Delta, narrates the wretched human consequences of oil exploration.  A community left without development despite its resource riches, plagued by both poverty and in-fighting.  Royalties handed out by extractors have fallen into the pockets of the few, fuelling explosive tensions, culminating in bloody conflict leaving hundreds dead. SDN’s community engagement in Rumuekpe both highlighted the brutality of the conflicts, as well as the people’s yearning for peace and harmony.

Senate seeks creation of North East Development Commission

From Fred Itua, Abuja

SENATE, yesterday, received a bill seeking to establish the North-East Development Commission (NEDC), which will have legal powers to receive and manage funds from the Federation Account and international donors.

The bill stipulates that the zone will receive, on monthly basis, from the Federation Ac- count, an equivalent of 15 percent of the total monthly statutory allocations due to mem- ber states of the commission. This will be the contribution of the Federal Government to the commission.

Eighteen senators from the North-East, which cuts across party line, jointly submitted the bill before the Senate. The lawmakers told newsmen that the bill is aimed at rebuilding the zone, which they said has been devastated by Boko Haram.

Chairman of the North- East Senate Caucus, Danjuma Goje, who alongside his col- leagues from the zone, said the commission when set up, will complement other agen- cies of government, including state and local governments in rebuilding the region.

He also said when the com- mission is fully in force; it will function like the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) in the North- East, just as he expressed hope that the bill will receive expeditious passage and as- sent of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Meanwhile, in the bill submitted by the senators, the commission, when backed by law, will be charged with the

responsibility of settling, rehabilitating, and reconstructing the roads, houses, and business premises of victims of insurgency.

It will also address the problems of poverty, illiteracy, ecological problems, and other developmental challenges and environmental crisis facing the region.

The commission, according to the bill, will have a board which shall have a chairman, and six other members, all representing the six North-East states of Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe

Boko Haram releases new video, shows missing Chibok girls

Boko Haram releases new video, shows missing Chibok girls

Boko Haram releases new video, shows missing Chibok girls

LAGOS – Boko Haram released a new video on Monday claiming to show the missing schoolgirls, alleging the teenagers had converted to Islam and would not be released until all militant prisoners were freed.

The group’s leader, Abubakar Shekau, speaks on the video obtained by AFP for 17 minutes before showing what he said were the girls, in Muslim dress and praying in an undisclosed rural location.

A total of 276 girls were abducted on April 14 from the northeastern town of Chibok, in Borno state, which has a sizeable Christian community. Some 223 are still missing.

The footage shows about 130 girls in black and grey full-length hijabs sitting on scrubland near trees, reciting the first chapter of the Muslim holy book, the Koran, and holding their palms upwards in prayer.

Three of the girls are interviewed. Two say they were Christian and had converted while one said she was Muslim. Most of the group were seated. The girls appeared calm and one said that they had not been harmed.

There was no indication of when the video was taken, although the quality is better than on previous occasions and at one point an armed man is seen in shot with a hand-held video camera.

Yesterday, Janelle Monáe stopped by "The Today Show" to perform her single "Yoga", accompanied by Jidenna and her band. Monáe also performed "Tightrope" from her 2010 album The ArchAndroid. She ended her performance proclaiming, "God bless America," but the rest of her message was cut off on the air, the Huffington Post reports. Footage shows that Monáe continued on with comments about police brutality before the camera cut away and an anchor begins to speak over her. Watch her "Tightrope" performance, as well as the cut-off portion below. Read Monáe's full quote:

God bless America. God bless all, all the lost lives to police brutality. We want white America to know that we stand tall today. We want black America to know that we stand tall today. We will not be silenced…

Monáe and Jidenna also recently stopped by New York radio station Hot 97's "Ebro in the Morning" and addressed the sampling controversy surrounding Jidenna's "Classic Man", Spin reports. Iggy Azalea tweeted that the song sampled her own "Fancy" with Charli XCX. Jidenna, however, confirmed that his song does not contain a "Fancy" sample. Amethyst Kelly (Iggy Azalea) and Charlotte Aitchison (Charli XCX) are credited as lyricists on "Classic Man", but Jidenna said he was just being careful after the "Blurred Lines" ruling from earlier this year.

Monáe added, "She steal from us, we steal back," commenting on the perception of Azalea as appropriating music herself. She later qualified, "It’s all love. I mean, we all inspire each other. That’s what it’s about." Watch the full interview below. (The "Classic Man" discussion begins around the nine-minute mark.)

Earlier this week, Monáe, Jidenna, and the Wondaland Records crew released the protest song "Hell You Talmbout".

Nigeria: Oliseh must adapt to overcome Swazi challenge

Last month's win over Cameroon ensured the critics sheathed their swords, now the new coach must seek a different motivation, as well as different tactics, to trump Sihlangu Sem...

COMMENT    By Praise Emmanuel Follow on facebook@emmeykeys praise

The significance of Nigeria’s last international – a 3-0 result against arch-nemesis Cameroon – is purely a matter of subjectivity. This is a theme that is hard to dispense with where Sunday Oliseh is concerned: faith cannot be wholly reconciled to rationality, and we all see what we want to.

The scoreline was great, and the performance was much improved, but these were innately riddled with caveats: Cameroon played almost all of the second period with 10 men, and Volker Finke had the five-time African champions listing in the middle of nowhere by the end. Still, you can only beat what’s in front of you, and if for nothing else, the win at least gives the sceptics something to work with.

For the first time since his appointment as Super Eagles boss, Oliseh will go into an international window on the back of overwhelming positivity. This is as much a good thing as it is a bad one: while he gets breathing space, he also loses the chip on the shoulder that seems to fuel modern football management; the constant need to motivate a group of lavishly remunerated professional footballers by appealing to an artificial sense of injustice.

supreme court halts saraki's trial at cct

Supreme Court halts Saraki’s trial at CCT

The Supreme Court, this morning, stayed further hearing on the 13-count criminal charge pending against ‎the Senate President, Dr. Olubukola Saraki, before the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT.

The apex court, in a ruling today, directed the Justice Danladi Umar-led tribunal to suspend the trial to enable it to hear and determine the substantive appeal that Saraki lodged before it.

This was even as the prosecuting counsel, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs, SAN, entered ‎an undertaking before the apex court that “no unusual step will be taken by the federal government”, in relation to the matter.

In their ruling, a five-man panel of Justices of the Supreme Court ‎led by Justices John Fabiyi, held: “It is imperative to state that all the parties, including the Code of Conduct Tribunal, should tarry a while to enable this court to determine the appeal before it.

“In effect, further proceeding at the CCT should be stayed pending the hearing of the appeal. Hearing date will be communicated to all the parties”, Justice Fabiyi ruled.

All the other members of the apex court panel also concurred with ‎the lead ruling.

Saraki is in his appeal marked SC/852/2015, praying the apex court to invoke its powers and quash the 13-count criminal charge that was preferred against him by the federal government.

‎Besides, he wants the Supreme Court to set aside the judgement of the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal which on October 30, gave the government the nod to open its case by call witnesses to ‎testify against him.

In the appeal he filed through his team of lawyers led by Mr. J.B. Daudu, SAN, the embattled Senate President, applied for: “An order staying further proceedings in Charge No: CCT/ABJ/01/2015 between Federal Republic of Nigeria vs Dr. Olubukola Abubakar Saraki fixed for hearing on 5th and 6th of November, 2015 pending the determination of the appeal pending before the Supreme Court against the judgment of the Court of Appeal dated 30th October, 2015.”

DON JAZZY SAYS HE MAY NOT WORK WITH D' banj

I may work with D’banj – Don Jazzy

on   /   in Entertainment, News 8:50 am   /
BY PRAISE EMMANUEL
Leader of Nigeria’s high flying music crew, MAVIN’s Don Jazzy is one individual who has contributed in no small measure to the growth of the music industry in Nigeria. Over a year ago, the likes of Korede Bello, Reekado Banks and Dija were greenhorns in the industry until Don Dorobucci gave them the track to run their own races. Today, they have grown to become stars in their own right, thanks to Don Jazzy’s masterstroke.
In this interview, head of the Supreme Mavin Dynasty reveals the reason behind the forthcoming Mavin Access Concert, possibility of working with D’banj again, why he won’t release his own album anytime soon and other issues.
Why did it take you this long to put together a concert of this magnitude?
I have been planning things in my head but then, it’s now that we are going live. There is no point doing something when you don’t have content. I am a perfectionist, so, until I know that I have what it takes to do one, I won’t do it. I would have come out to say let’s organize a concert, but if you don’t have correct content there is no point doing one
Will D’banj be performing at this concert?
Right now I cannot categorically tell you whether he will call me to say: “Oh you are organizing a concert too? I will come o.”But right now, he is not billed to perform at the concert
Do you have plans to have international artistes at the concert?
No.
Will other artistes be performing aside from the Mavins?
It’s a Mavin concert .Obviously you will see other artistes perform. I have done collaborations with a lot of people. I have done collaborations with P-square, Timaya, Olamide and many more. It’s a Mavin’s and friends concert but more emphasis will be placed on the Mavins.

You are known to be generous; don’t you think you need to work with a foundation to make it official?
I don’t trust some of these foundations. I think it’s just people looking for an opportunity to collect money. I don’t think I need to set up a foundation before I help people. I help people regardless of that. A lot of people have been telling me to set up a foundation. I might do that at a point to satisfy people. For now, it’s not a priority.
What does it take to work with you?
It is important you have the talent and the next thing is for you to locate me. Social media is the best place to find me. Follow me and I will follow you back. I won’t listen to the person’s song if I think that the person looks like a trouble maker. Some people might tell you they sent you a song and you now made it your own. Another issue is creating time for it.
Your label mates have been recording songs back to back, what is responsible for that?
We always record, we never stop recording.
When are we getting an album from Reekado Banks, Dija and Korede Bello?
If you ask them now, they will tell you they don’t want to. People drop albums and decline, it’s not good.
