Senate gives Buhari 2-week ultimatum to end fuel scarcity

on   /   in News 1:31 pm

ByEmmanuel Uwaomah & Don Joseph John

ABUJA – THE Senate Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), has directed the Minister of Petroleum Resources,President Muhammadu Buhari, to end the ongoing fuel scarcity in the country within two weeks from now.

This came on the heels of disclosure by the Pipeline Products Marketing Company, PPMC, that Nigeria lost a whopping N50 billion in ten months as a result of vandalisation of petroleum pipeline in some parts of the country.

Chairman of the committee, Senator Uche Ekwunife, who gave the directive,Thursday, in Abuja, during the committee’s meeting with top officials of Ministry of Petroleum Resources, insisted that the petroleum minister must not only end the scarcity but ensure that fuel was sold to the public at government’s controlled price of N87.00 per litre.

Senator Ekwunife, representing Anambra South, on the platform of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, frowned at the ongoing fuel crisis, saying Nigerians were suffering untold hardship following the development.

Fuming over what she described as unnecessary fuel crisis, Ekwunife, said:”We are mandating the Minister of Petroleum Resources, the Permanent Secretary and heads of agencies to stop this fuel scarcity in two weeks.

“We are giving a target now,we don’t wan’t to know how you would achieve it.Nigerians want to see an end to this fuel scarcity.

Fuel scarcity: Kachikwu ignites hope with new refining models

ONE of the take home messages from the Group Managing Director, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Dr. Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu, after scaling his ministerial screening was that finally, the nation’s four refineries will be made to work.
Kachikwu

Kachikwu

If this happens by December as being planned, then not only will Nigerians kiss goodbye to the perennial fuel shortages that bite harder during this period, but also significantly reduce the cycle of petroleum products importation and the attendant huge capital flight and subsidy claims.

Heads were up at the National Assembly, as millions of Nigerians watched the live telecast of the ministerial screening, when Kachikwu gave the assurance that all the local refineries would have been re-streamed by the year end.

According to him, this will displace massive fuel imports, cut huge import bills, reduce pressure on the nation’s lean foreign exchange earnings occasioned by the free fall in crude oil prices at the international market as well as create multiplier effects in the domestic economy.

He expressed confidence in the technical skills of the refineries workforce, saying that over 80 percent of the NNPC technical staff are competent. He cited the achievements of the Port Harcourt Refining Company, PHRC, at rehabilitating the plants as part of the potential available in the industry.

Emirates Expands Network in Mainland China

14 December 2015

Dubai, UAE - 14 December 2015: Emirates today announced that it will expand its services in mainland China with four weekly flights to Yinchuan (INC) and Zhengzhou (CGO) utilising a Boeing 777-200LR aircraft, starting from 3rd May 2016. These services will offer new international connectivity for two of China’s fastest growing cities, and expand Emirates’ destination offering on the mainland to five, including: Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou.

Yinchuan, the capital of Ningxia, lies to the West of the Yellow River and to the East of Helan Mountain. With a large Muslim population, it serves as a gateway connecting China to Arabic countries, and is positioned as a hub for economic and trade cooperation and cultural exchange between China and the Middle East.

Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan Province and a major transportation interchange for central China, is an educational, technological and economic centre. The second largest city in central China, Zhengzhou’s strategic location has enabled the city to become one of the largest economic hubs in China.

“With the opening of these new strategic routes, Emirates looks forward to contributing to the enhancement of China’s trade links with the rest of the world, in particular with the UAE and Arab world. We believe the new international air links that we are launching will help create tourism and trade opportunities for Chinese business and leisure travellers that may not otherwise exist,” said HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive, Emirates Airline and Group.

“With our established network across Africa, Europe and the Middle East, Emirates is a ready-made connector of people and trade, and we look forward to further developing aviation links with China in a mutually beneficial way.”

Kano (Nigeria) (AFP) - Deadly clashes erupted between the military and Shiite Muslims in Zaria, northern Nigeria, which also left the group's headquarters and the home of its leader destroyed, witnesses said Sunday.

Armed soldiers carried out crackdowns on the pro-Iranian Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) following an incident on Saturday involving the convoy of the chief of army staff.

The IMN, which seeks to establish an Islamic state through an Iranian-styled revolution, has been at loggerheads with Nigeria's secular authorities, leading to occasionally violent confrontations.

The group's leader, Ibrahim Zakzaky, has periodically been incarcerated for alleged incitement and subversion.

Northern Nigeria is majority Muslim and largely Sunni.

Obama really wants to go to Cuba, but only if the conditions are right

Obama really wants to go to Cuba, but only if the conditions are right

Olivier Knox
Chief Washington Correspondent
December 14, 2015

This story is part of a weeklong Yahoo series marking one year since the opening of relations between the United States and Cuba.

President Obama promised in an exclusive interview with Yahoo News that he “very much” hopes to visit Cuba during his last year in office, but only if he can meet with pro-democracy dissidents there.

“If I go on a visit, then part of the deal is that I get to talk to everybody,” Obama said. “I’ve made very clear in my conversations directly with President [Raul] Castro that we would continue to reach out to those who want to broaden the scope for, you know, free expression inside of Cuba.”

Speaking in the Cabinet Room of the White House, Obama strongly hinted that he would make a decision “over the next several months.”

The president said he hopes that “sometime next year” he and his top aides will see enough progress in Cuba that they can say that “now would be a good time to shine a light on progress that’s been made, but also maybe (go) there to nudge the Cuban government in a new direction.”

White House aides privately describe an Obama visit – under the right circumstances – as the logical culmination of the new policy direction that he announced almost exactly one year ago.

On Dec. 17, 2014, Obama and Raul Castro stunned the world by disclosing that they had held secret negotiations and were prepared to usher in a new era of U.S.-Cuba relations, starting with the resumption of full diplomatic ties. Embassies reopened in Havana and Washington, the United States removed Cuba from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, and the two sides took steps to increase travel and business opportunities.

Obama has undertaken many changes using his executive powers, and indicated in the interview that he would continue looking at ways to do so in 2016. But Obama needs Congress to roll back the centerpiece of America’s Cold War-era pressure on Cuba and lift the U.S. trade embargo.

China pollution: First ever red alert in effect in Beijing

China pollution: First ever red alert in effect in Beijing

  • 8 December 2015

Image caption Although it is the first time a red alert has been issued, pollution has previously reached far worse levels in the city

Schools in Beijing are closed and outdoor construction halted as the Chinese capital's first ever pollution "red alert" came into effect.

The alert, the highest possible warning level, was issued late Monday and will last until midday on Thursday.

Limits have been placed on car use and some factories have been ordered to stop operations.

It comes as China, the world's worst polluter, takes part in talks on carbon emissions in Paris.

It is the first time China has declared a red alert under the four-tier alert system, which was adopted a little over two years ago, although pollution levels were far from the city's worst.

At 07:00 local time on Tuesday (23:00 GMT on Monday), when the alert came into effect, the US Embassy's air pollution monitor in Beijing reported that the intensity of the tiny particles known as PM 2.5 was at 291 micrograms per cubic metre.

By 11:00 it had dropped very slightly to 250 - still a level it described as "very unhealthy". Levels of the poisonous particles in the suburbs were reported at several times that number.

The World Health Organization recommends 25 micrograms per cubic metre as the maximum safe level.

John Sudworth, BBC News, Beijing: "Why red now?"

As I cycled into the office this morning, smog mask clamped firmly in place, the traffic was certainly lighter. Beijing's first red alert means half of all cars must stay off the roads; odd numbered license plates today, even numbered ones tomorrow.

But although the air is indeed an unpleasant, filthy grey, the pollution index is actually a good deal lower than it was this time last week, when the quantity of dangerous particulate matter (PM 2.5) surged to around 40 times the World Health Organisation's maximum guideline. Today, it is a mere 10 times that limit.

So why red now? Well, the lack of any previous red alerts has been met with increasingly loud howls of derision. What would it take, people wondered last week - as their children felt their way to the still open schools through the poisonous gloom - for the government to act?

Perhaps it is the growing public pressure that has finally made the difference this time round.

Why petrol is scarce – IPMAN

Why petrol is scarce – IPMANWhy petrol is scarce – IPMAN

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria said the current scarcity of fuel in some parts of the country was due to the change in depot price of the commodity.
The National Secretary of IPMAN, Alhaji Umar Gulumbe, offered the reasons while addressing newsmen in Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday in reaction to the current scarcity experienced in Kebbi and other states of the country.
Gulumbe said traffic congestion and the delay in loading the product on waiting petrol tankers were also responsible for the scarcity of the commodity.
He explained that the actual price his members got the Premium Motor Spirit as a retailer from the depots in Lagos State was N77.66k.
He expressed dismay that a new price of N88 has been introduced.
Gulumbe said: “Initially, it was N77.
“But we just woke up to hear new price of N88 per litre.
“So you see it is not possible for our members to sell it at N87 at filling stations, considering other expenses of loading, duration it takes on the way for clearance.

“We cannot be selling at a loss.
“Apart from that, let me reveal to you that we pay extra money in a separate account before we can get the commodity or else our tanks will be at stand still for months.”
Similarly, the Zonal Chairman of IPMAN in charge of the North West, Alhaji Dan Jega, attributed the scarcity to the shortage of the commodity in almost all the deports in the country.
Jega said: “The fuel is not just there.
“Out of over 100 depots in the country, only Emirates, Oando and Nipcon have fuel.”
NAN checks in Birnin Kebbi showed that only NNPC Mega station sold, while the other filling stations were shut down.
Malam Mohammed Yeldu, a civil servant, lamented the artificial scarcity, saying if it continued, it would affect the price of other essential goods.
Yeldu called on the Federal Government to intervene.

2016 blockbuster 2016:captain america civil war

Captain America: Civil War - 6 May

If Batman V Superman is pivotal to the future of the DC movie universe, then Captain America: Civil War is hardly without significant for the Marvel equivalent. In terms of character introductions alone, here's where we're likely to meet Chadwick Boseman's Black Panther, and the new Spider-Man. But crucially, this sets in motion events that lead to Avengers: Infinity War.

Furthermore, the film is no small event in itself. It's set to pit Chris Evans' Captain America against Robert Downey Jr's Tony Stark for a start, and major ramifications are expected. We'll stay spoiler-free here, but we looked in more detail about the expected impact of Captain America: Civil War here

Joe and Anthony Russo, who more than earned their Marvel stripes with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, return to direct this one. Expect fireworks...

Black Panther’s Role in ‘Captain America: Civil War’ Revealed

EMMANUEL KEYS  4 hours ago

captain-america-civil-war-black-panther-chadwick-boseman

When Marvel Studios unveiled the first trailer for the superhero-stuffed Captain America: Civil War, folks were not only buzzing about the discord between Chris Evans’ Cap and Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, but also the brief look we got at a brand new Marvel superhero: Black Panther. Chadwick Boseman brings Marvel Comics’ first black superhero to life on the big screen in Civil War, and while he’s not the star of the film (that comes in Black Panther, which is slated for release in February 2018), the character certainly plays an integral role in the sequel’s storyline.

In EW’s latest issue, which chronicles all things Captain America: Civil War with one of the most embarrassing covers in its history (“Meow”? Really?), it’s revealed that Black Panther’s allegiance is in flux throughout Civil War, although he’s not particularly a fan of Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes (aka The Winter Soldier):

Anonymous Hackers Target Israeli Websites and Leak Credentials

Anonymous Hackers Target Israeli Websites and Leak Credentials

The infamous hacking group Anonymous that vowed an 'Electronic Holocaust' against Israel and promised to 'erase Israel from cyberspace' on 7th April, managed to launch a cyber attack, beginning Tuesday morning.

In a spooky video "message to Israel" posted on YouTube March 4, Anonymous declared cyber attack against Israel on April 7 in response to what the group calls 'crimes in the Palestinian territories.'

Today we noticed a number of hacking incidents against Israeli cyberspace under #OpIsrael.

Anonymous conduct #OpIsrael attack against Israel every year on 7th April and this is the fourth annual cyber attack on Israel in order to protest against Israeli bombing on the Palestinian territory.

CYBER ATTACKS AGAINST ISRAEL

Today, Anonymous and Pro-Palestinian hackers targeted dozens of Israeli Government websites, including the Knesset portal (parliament), as well as websites related to the Israeli court system and the Education Ministry.

In Brief, Anonymous group claimed following cyber attacks:

  • At least 150,000 phone numbers, Facebook, Gmail and Hotmail Israel accounts have been hacked.

  • The official website of Israeli Singer Shalom Hanoch was hacked.

  • The website of the Israeli Center for Educational Excellence was also taken down.

The hacktivist group replaced the affected websites’ homepages with photos of a Muslim holy site in Jerusalem and militants holding the Islamic State militant flag, with a message signed by "AnonGhost."

While many website owners have taken the threats seriously. However, Israel's Computer Emergency Response Team issued a statement saying that no major government sites were affected, as they were already aware of this and was ready to foil the attacks.

ANONYMOUS HACKER LEAKS LOGINS TO 6,000 ROUTERS

Anonymous published log-in credentials (usernames and passwords) for nearly 6,000 Israel Routers publicly.

However, router password dump doesn't damage the Israeli cyber-infrastructure instantly, but these sensitive credentials for Israel network could be used later by anyone, hackers or law enforcement, to penetrate into the affected modems.

In addition, the Israel Security Agency, Shin Bet and the National Cyber Defense Center -- a part of the Prime Minister’s Office, are providing measures to civilian Internet websites on how to defend themselves against the cyber attack.

In April 2013, the Anonymous unit caused $3 Billion worth of damage to Israel, when the group targeted about 30,000 Israeli bank accounts, 100,000 websites, 5,000 Twitter accounts and over 40,000 Facebook pages under #OpIsrael.

During Operation OpIsrael, Anonymous hacking group published the personal data of 5,000 Israeli officials over the Internet, which included names, ID numbers and personal email addresses.

When we talk about the damage caused to Israeli websites, it is a temporary damage caused to the country that could be recovered in few hours or days. However, the damage caused by Israel in the Palestinian territories, including last summer's Gaza conflict, is something that could take years to recover.
